Lesson Plan: Retiring Overseas (1.5 hours)


Warm-Up (10-15 minutes):

Purpose:
  • Activate students’ prior knowledge.
  • Establish the context for the lesson.
Activities:
  1. Initial Inquiry:
    • Pose the idea that some people choose to retire in a different country. Ask if students know of anyone from Japan who has done this. Share responses.
  2. Question Formation Exercise:
    • Students break into small groups and brainstorm questions they would ask a couple in their 60s who have moved to a foreign country. They have 5 minutes for this task.
  3. Group Presentation:
    • Groups share their questions with the class. Discuss commonalities and unique queries among the groups.

Presentation (15-20 minutes):

Purpose:
  • Introduce key vocabulary and concepts related to retiring overseas.
Activities:
  1. Vocabulary Introduction:
    • Present key phrases and vocabulary, explaining meanings and usage.
  2. Video Screening:

Practice (30-40 minutes):

Purpose:
  • Enable students to apply the new vocabulary and concepts in context.
Activities:
  1. Comprehension Discussion:
    • Students, in small groups, discuss answers to comprehension questions related to the video.
  2. Geography Exercise:
    • Provide world maps and a list of countries mentioned in the video. Students locate these countries on the map.

Production (15-20 minutes):

Purpose:
  • Demonstrate individual and collective understanding of the lesson’s content.
Activities:
  1. Hypothetical Discussion:
    • Students imagine they’ve won the lottery and discuss, in pairs, which country they’d move to and why.
  2. Peer Presentations:
    • Students present their decisions to the class and field questions from their peers.

Cool Down/Reflection (10-15 minutes):

Purpose:
  • Consolidate learning and reflect on lesson objectives.
Activities:
  1. Class Summary:
    • Quick recap of key points discussed and learned.
  2. Self-Assessment:
    • Students rate their own participation
