  • Adapt pragmatically but within reason. (e.g. learn greetings, dress conservatively, etc., but don’t feel obligated to conform to customs that make you uncomfortable.)
  • Uphold personal values. Know your personal ethical limits.
  • Avoid blindly judging or criticizing.
  • Ask questions respectfully.

Remembering (recalling facts, terms, concepts, principles, etc.)

  1. What are some of the basic Japanese phrases or greetings that visitors should learn before traveling to Japan?
  2. What are some of the most common cultural traditions or etiquette rules that visitors to Japan should be aware of?
  3. What are some of the common cultural misunderstandings or mistakes that foreigners often make when visiting Japan?
  4. Can you name some of the behaviors or actions by foreigners that have been reported in the news recently?

Understanding (comprehending, interpreting, summarizing, etc.)

  1. Why have some foreigners’ behaviors caused controversy or outrage in Japan?
  2. Why do you think some foreigners struggle to understand or follow certain cultural norms or behaviors when visiting Japan?
